Subject: ACCC Gas Inquiry - invitation to provide information [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]
Dear Grahame Aston
RE: Invitation to provide information on user experience in the gas market to the ACCC Gas Inquiry
As you may know, the ACCC have been tasked by the Australian Government to conduct a wide-ranging inquiry into the supply of and demand for wholesale gas in Australia to assess the state of competition in these markets and how well they are functioning.
Since the commencement of our Inquiry in April 2017, we have found that the East Coast gas market is in a tight supply/demand position and that domestic prices have been in excess of the ACCC’s estimates of benchmark prices. The market also lacks transparency across the supply chain. The effect of these conditions is felt right across the economy, from households to big business. More information about the Inquiry and reports released so far can be found on the ACCC’s website here: www.accc.gov.au/regulated-infrastructure/energy/gas-inquiry-2017-2020.
Feedback from gas users and their representatives has been an important contribution to our reporting to date, and we are looking to continue this engagement throughout 2018. As such, we would now like to check back in to get an updated understanding of how the gas market is functioning at the moment. This will allow us to see if the situation has changed since our December 2017 analysis of consumer experiences, and will also help us identify any areas that need further investigation. Any information provided will be considered alongside information we receive from gas suppliers on all recent contracts entered into and all unfulfilled offers.
We would like to invite Plastics Industry Manufacturers of Australia to provide information to our Inquiry via a short meeting, either in our Melbourne or Canberra offices, or via teleconference, over the next few weeks. Suitable times include Friday 27 April at 10am or Monday 30 April at 3.30pm. Otherwise please let us know what time would work for you.
We will also separately be contacting individual users for separate meetings to discuss their individual experiences.
